Our History

In 1964, at the age of 24, Dave Brown was awarded the Ford Franchise in Guttenberg, Iowa.  He called the dealership Brown's Ford.  The building was located at 602 S. River Park Drive and consisted of a one-car showroom and three-car Service Department.  At the time, there were two employees: Dave Brown and Evelyn Groth.  Two years later, Dave acquired a building located behind the dealership, which greatly increased the capacity of the Service Department.

In 1967, Brown's was granted the Mercury Franchise. Then, in 1975, a new body shop was opened on Highway 52 in Guttenberg.  Two years later, Waukon Ford became part of the business.

In 1977, Brown's began converting and selling vans.  The conversion company was called Van Tura Vans. In 1980, the Waukon Ford operation was closed.

In 1981, the Big A Auto Parts franchise was acquired. The following year, 1982, the land at the present location on Highway 52, in Guttenberg was purchased and the Ford Satellite franchise was granted in Elkader. In 1983, a new facility was built in Guttenberg.

In 1988, Hillside Motors in Elkader was purchased from Earl Swales, we acquired the Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick franchises and moved the Elkader operation into the Gunder Road facilities.

In 1990, a GM Satellite location and Winnebago franchise were awarded in Guttenberg.  Winnebago repealed their franchise four years later. Six short years later, in 1996, Brown's Sales and Leasing in Guttenberg was awarded the Dutchmen Trailer franchise.

In 1998, Dan Lynch Ford in Dyersville was purchased from Dan Lynch, by Dave, David and Forest Brown and the name was changed to Victory Ford.  Elkader was awarded the Jeep franchise. In 2000, Brown's sold the Guttenberg Detail Shop.

In 2008, the Elkader property was expanded and refurbished an existing building into their Detail Department. In 2009, General Motors and Chrysler went through Bankruptcy.  It was a very tense time for many dealers including us.  This was due to many dealers losing their franchises.  We kept our GM and Chrysler franchises, but General Motors did away with the Pontiac line and Ford did away with the Mercury line.  Ford did not go through bankruptcy.  We also added the Forester, Mirada, Solera, Sunseeker and Freelander lines of motorhomes in Guttenberg.

In 2010, we sold our last new Mercury and Pontiac.

In 2011, we expanded our RV facilities in Guttenberg with the addition of our new RV Center.  The Ford "King of the Hill" rock display was added in Dyersville.

Finally, in 2013, Brown's Family of Dealerships acquired our fourth dealership formerly Thein Motor Sales and West Branch Iowa. The dealership was renamed to Brown's West Branch and carries the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram franchise.

The "Browns Family of Dealerships" currently have a team of over 150 employees in Guttenberg, Elkader, and Dyersville combined.
